Seaside bustle on the promenade, built as the old Upper Walk between the town and the Cobb Harbour in 1817; it is now known as Marine Parade. The view looks north-eastwards from between Langmoor Gardens and the former bathing-machine steps to the Bay Hotel (centre). Up to the left (above the telephone kiosk) stood Wings, which was demolished in 1928. This was thought to have been the house in which Jane Austen stayed, but modern research shows that it must have been Pyne House, in Cornhill, above the Square.

I noticed with some surprise a photo of myself aged about 12 years. I am the girl on the left with the ponytail the year being about 1960. I don't recall the boys name but it looks as if we are standing by the machine that used to print letters of the alphabet. I think it cost one old penny for 20/25 letters.
