The advent of parcel post in 1883, and the right of delivery to every household introduced in 1897, would have increased both the weight of the postmans sack and the length of his round. Now in 1907 he is probably looking forward to a well earned retirement when he will no longer have to make the long slog up Countisberry Hill to deliver to the pub.
