Machen Trethomas Bedwas 1960

A Memory of Machen.

Hello Diane, How are you?I was born and brought up in Machen, 1 Brynhyfryd Terrace. Moved to Trethomas after marriage, lived in Lower Glyn Gwyn (1954) .The Glue Pot you talk about was the Lewis's Hotel (pub), do you remember the large yard? The pub that looked as if someone had it in their front room was the 'Forge and Hammer' in White Hart. The White Hart pub is still there but caters for meals now also. Now I hope I can refresh your memory; the pub where most of us lads went was the 'Rising Sun' on the way up from 'The Gelli Wasted' farm, on the main road between Machen and Trethomas up to Graig Rhacca farm. Remember the railway bridge and then just around the bend was the pub - very, very old. My father and father in law both worked in the Bedwas Navigation Colliery. You say that you went dancing in the Machen Club..it used to be a dressmakers shop. The old club across the way, at the bottom of the Dranllwyn was always call 'The Ark'. Many more memories of Machen, Trethomas and Bedwas. Be nice to have a contact with you. I am now living in Cardiff.

Hello, My name is Bernard living in Caerleon and being in my autumn years many memories flood my mind, some posing questions. One of these follows. I like the occasional relaxing pint at a nearby pub just outside Caerleon``The St. Julians Inn,``which boasts wood paneling on the walls of the lounge which was once salvaged along with many other items, and sold off from the luxuriously appointed ocean liner ``Doric`` when it was being broken up at John Cashmores Scrapyard Newport. When i was a young man, trying to impress the ladies like a fool, by taking this one and that one out to various pubs in my my car, we visited a pub a few few times which was near Machen/lower Machen. To explain it`s location, memory permitting----driving from Newport just before approaching the Machen area, turning right into a short lane leading to a pub, the lane then going on back down to the main road. The pub could have been called The Swan but i could be very wrong there. I remember sitting in the pub with the young lady and reading a brass plate on the wall proclaiming that the wood paneling on the walls there, and the paneling in the St. Julians Inn at Caerleon had also come from the ocean liner ``Doric `` when it was being scrapped in Newport. While recently visiting the Machen area i could not locate the pub, perhaps now residential. Does anyone have knowledge of this pub with the Doric paneling. I remember the paneling but i don`t remember who the young lady was.
