Our first rural tour heads eastwards, skirting to the north of the Pevensey Levels, those great marshes largely drained during the Middle Ages, and following the road that heads for Ninfield and Bexhill. Magham Down, about two miles north east of Hailsham, is where the road rises onto the higher ground it follows towards Bexhill. The late Victorian Red Lion pub on the left is closed and for sale (January 2004), while the post office on the right is, as in many other villages, closed and now a house, Post Office House.

Magham Down Red Lion And Post Office
My family moved to Magham Down in December 1953, when I was nearly 5.   The Red Lion was run by the Mounsey family.  The shop and post office was run by Joyce Russell.  In the shop were sweets in large glass jars, many made by Angear's of Herstmonceux.  They were weighed out and sold by the quarter, in white paper bags.  The shop was in the main part of the house, but the post office was ...see more

St Mark's Church, Magham Down
The church was a mission hall, part of Hailsham Parish. It was constructed of green painted corrugated iron. There was just one large room, with a curtained vestry at the rear. There were two services a month, a communion service at 8am on the 4th Sunday, and on the third Sunday of the month, an afternoon service which was a mixture of Matins and Evening Prayer. However, if you would particularly like to buy one of these please get in touch quoting the Frith negative number,(s) the town name and size of print you would like to buy. On receipt of your enquiry our archivist will check the scan and advise you if the quality is good enough.

What is an Album?

An album is a way to save a selection of Frith photos, maps and memories that are of interest to you.

Creating an Album enables you to make short lists and then make a final selection from the album. In particular it makes ordering things like calendars much easier - simply create an Album of the 12 photos you like and then use the Album when placng your order - our order process will give you this option.

You can create as many Albums as you want, so perhaps make one for your hometown, where you live now, where your parents live now etc.
