More about this scene

This Edwardian view at one of the Thames' most famous locks captures well the increasing affluence of the middle and lower middle classes; they flocked out of London in their thousands onto the river at weekends, hiring punts, skiffs, rowing boats, sailing boats and steam launches by the score. On Ascot Sunday 1888 over 800 boats and 72 steam launches passed through the lock.
