More about this scene

The lock, first built in 1830 to cope with the six foot fall in the river, was rebuilt in 1912, the year before this view was taken. It has subsequently been rebuilt again, but the more elaborate balustered bridge of 1912 remains, replacing the one featured in Gregory's painting. The lock-keeper's cottage was partly rebuilt in 2000.
