More about this scene
Here we see the front face of Owen's College on Oxford Road, and you can see similarities to the Assize Court, and even the Town Hall, all of which were designed by Alfred Waterhouse. The building to the right of the tower is Whitworth Hall, paid for by the Sir Joseph Whitworth Estate. One fact that must be mentioned here is that Owen had at first bequeathed all his estate to a friend and fellow merchant, George Faulkner, who turned down the money, saying: 'I have enough to last me my lifetime; why not follow your beliefs and found a college?'
