More about this scene
Originally this area was called Acres Field, and it was here that the Manchester Fair was held on the eve, day and morrow of St Matthew, September 20-22. It was here that woollen fairs and cattle markets were held, until the square became too developed; then the fairs moved down to Castlefields. In 1706 the square was laid out in plots, and building started. The church was paid for by Lady Ann Bland, the last of the Mosley family. Queen Anne was on the throne, so naturally the church was named St Ann's when it opened in 1709.
