More about this scene
Melplash's only real claim on history is the story of Sir Thomas More (a distant relative of the saint): when he was Sheriff of Dorset, he freed all the prisoners from Dorchester gaol. More had to give both Melplash and his favourite daughter to Lord Paulet, who interceded with the king on his behalf in search of a pardon.
