Memories Of A Sweetshop

A Memory of Merrow.

My father owned and operated the tobacconist and confectioners in this parade of shops from 1954 for many years. He was a blinded WWII serviceman trained by St Dunstans. The lower row of 3 white shops to the right of this photo I believe was originally 'Tea Rooms'. Another was an ironmongers, I forget the middle one. They have been demolished recently for ? flats?

I remember 'Mr Cookson' was his name Ernie. He was amazing, always totally courteous and knew his products inside out - I think he even sold a cigarette lighter to a friend of mine by describing the benefits of this particular model! The shop was always immaculate - considered posh - and was one of the few shops in the area to open on a Sunday. My then boyfriend (now husband!) used to buy me some of the small packets of Lindt chocolate bears before we went for our Sunday walk 'up the Downs'!
I think that before a couple of houses were demolished, there used to be a small branch of Lloyds bank, Cooksons, Mr Stiles ironmongery and at various times a baker and a greengrocer shop.
I think that at one point there was even a travel agent.
