More about this scene

Merthyr Tydfil still has the ruins of a medieval castle. Gilbert de Clare, Lord of Glamorgan built it on land claimed by Humphrey de Bohun, Lord of Breconshire. There were many horse- and cattle-stealing raids, and an actual battle was reputed to have taken place near here called Maes-y- faenor. Edward I had Morlais Castle partly destroyed to prevent its use as a fortress.

Sparked a Memory for you?

If this has sparked a memory, why not share it here?

I was about 14 and my friend Alan Davies and I used to walk from Twynyrodyn on a Sunday morning to Morlais Castle. There we would wonder and speculate about its history and what battles were fought there. How many people died and on what spot. Were we standing on a patch of ground that had seen blood and gore? That was a glorious summer in Merthyr as I remember it.
