A fascinating early photograph which shows the crags below Hay Top in Monsal Dale, and beyond them the freshly-excavated limestone scree (centre) of the embankment which was to take the Midland line through the valley. It was this development which was to excite the wrath of conservationist John Ruskin in a famous outburst.
