The memorial commemorates the first radio signal sent across the Atlantic on 12 December 1901. The Morse letter 'S' was transmitted here to St John's, Newfoundland, where Guglielmo Marconi was eagerly listening. The Poldhu station closed in 1937, and the memorial was erected in the same year.
