With the Mumbles Railway carrying as many as 40,000 passengers on a bank holiday, the village prospered. The name 'Mumbles' actually derives from the French 'mamelles', meaning 'breasts'. Strictly speaking, the name actually refers to two islets near here, which are only accessible at low tide. However, the name has come to refer to the whole promontory. Note the three children by the tree on the right.
