A Great Place To Live And Grow Up
A Memory of New Addington.
Moved up in about 1945/46 into a prefab, our first home., I was about 1 year old so cannot remember the move. I used to help the prisoners of war build the roads, I had a wheelbarrow.
We lived at 133 Castle Hill Avenue, I think, it was the main road through the estate. Used to climb the pylons and play amongst the asbestos dump, I am not dead, yet! I was also responsible for changing the decor of the Prefab houses on King Henrys Drive, well, they shouldn't have left paint laying around.
I remember the United Dairy milk float, pulled by a horse, we made it bolt one day, sorry, we ran like hell. The fountain, opposite the parade I remember well, any one know how/why it was there
I attended the Sunday School at ,the wooden, St Edwards Church.
Kennies,, on the Parade I think Mick Noakes mum worked there., Attended Wolsey School. Rowdown and Fairchilds. Fairchilds was a good school, I did not realise how good, until later in life I think most of us did well.
I am still in touch with two people I knew from the prefabs, I only remember being happy and not realising how difficult things were because of the war. I still have my ration book.
I did join the cubs, a new pack run by Mrs Hall, a kind lady.
I will close now or this will turn into a book.
PS If any one knows who burgled our prefab, can I have the watches back!

but a brand new house with all the mod cons of the day. I have fond memories of the place. The the fountain i played in (after the war) was part of the "Garden City " that Boots the builder intended. We were evacuated in 1940 just before the bombs fell. We came back in time for the Doodlebugs-nice!! I have wtritten an article on the subect which I sent to the Croydon Advertiser but they did not print it for some reason. A Taylor 22 Nov 2014
