More about this scene
James Atherton, who bought the 170 acres of land on this north-east corner of Wirral, had to modify his original grand plans. He still ended up with a town built solely for entertainment, and for the newly-emerging holidaymakers. Egremont's James Askew put in more cash, but this could not stop the building of ordinary houses to rent or sell off and bring in much-needed revenue. It is thought that he named this new town to rival Brighton on the south coast, but his home in North Everton was next to Brighton le-Sands, a part of Liverpool, so maybe that is where the name came from.
