More about this scene
Now a full mile and a half from the sea, New Romney was, in the 13th century, first among the five Cinque Ports. But a great storm in 1287 diverted the River Rother to Rye and destroyed New Romney's harbour. It remained the seat of the chief courts of the Cinque Ports, and returned two members of Parliament up until 1832.
