More about this scene
If we look closely, we will see ladders reaching up to the eaves of The George Hotel, the white building behind the clock tower. Perhaps maintenance work was being carried out on the roof. Repairs of a more drastic kind were needed at St Peter's church on the nearby Nab headland, when it collapsed along with the cliff it stood on after severe flooding in 1360. A new church was built a little further inland, which was in turn destroyed by fire in the 19th century, and so the church had to be rebuilt once more.
