My Home 1960 1971
A Memory of Newton.
I was born in St Leonards Hospital, Sudbury and lived at 2, Assington Road, Newton Green which was then a council house with no sanitation until the mid 60's when a bath, flush toilet and an extension was put on. My Grandparents lived across the road at 10 Airey Houses (now demolished) and I went to Assington Primary School. I can remember the village shop as it was in the photo. In successive years the petrol pumps were removed and the shop continued until it was reverted into private housing in the 70's and the village shop became a room in a cottage in Church Road. Sadly there is no longer a shop in Newton although the Saracens Head is a thriving and welcome pub and I visit often.
I can remember years of pleasure playing over on the golf course with home made go karts, bikes and an old club and golf ball. At one time we did organize a village bonfire night on the 5th of November which lasted a few years. My Father passed away whilst living in Great Waldingfield but was buried in Newton Churchyard, the village where he was born, grew up and worked on the land, such was his love for the village.
