Newton Le Willows, High Street c.1965

More about this scene
These opposing views of the High Street are photographed at five year intervals. They show a quite surprising use of private cars - an indication of the prosperity of the town - but very few pedestrians. This may be due to the time of day or the fact that Newton's High Street was already losing its importance to the local economy, even in 1955. The relevance of two fish and chip shops sited directly opposite the Pied Bull pub needs no further comment, but one has to question the suitability of the branch of a national bank - apparently located in two converted houses - being situated next door to the simplicity of a local B&B. The enduring presence of the parish church of St Peter adds timelessness to the scene.
