Bygone Days

A Memory of Normanton.

I remember as a lad, every Sunday morning trying to get a game of soccer in Smirthwaite parl, there must have been 20 a side in them days, and the bowling matches, where the women would put on tea and buns ,and most of the older men seemed to wear 3 piece suits, fob watches and smoked a pipe,I remember a great sense of community from them days although now retired,I rember it well, and St Johns colliery sports days, with beer tents, races ,tug of war,I followed my father down the mine unti it closed,a hard life but great mates, not much money about but a happy childhood nontheless,
