Two of these buildings have now disappeared, as has the statue in the foreground. The Hippodrome Cinema, later the Gaumont, remained open until 1971, and the County Hotel, next to the Theatre Royal, closed in 1976. The statue of Samuel Morley was removed in 1927 and was unfortunately smashed in transit.
