More about this scene

This is a beautiful group. The 14th-century tower and spire of the parish church dominates the market place and school to its south, while to the east, the castle remains combine to produce the classic juxtaposition of lordly and ecclesiastical dominance.

A Selection of Memories from Oakham

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our website to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was, prompted by the photographs in our archive. Here are some from Oakham

Sparked a Memory for you?

If this has sparked a memory, why not share it here?

I went to Oakham in 1952'first to Junior House (now Chapmans) under Geoff Liebert and then from 1955 to 1959 in School House under John Moore. We lived in Wilmslow and I travelled to and from by train from Manchester. They were happy days and seeing all the photos of Oakham brought back many happy memories of the time I spent at Oakham. Richard Higgs Brisbane Australia.
Not 100% sure if it was 1966 or 67, but I do remember that the castle roof was covered with a tarp for quite some time after lightening hit the castle during a storm.
I remember the Queen's visit to Rutland in this year. I remember all the children from the local schools forming the shape of a horseshoe in a field/park? and the Queen being driven around the horseshoe waving to us all.
