More about this scene
With the arrival of the Piccadilly Line came an influx of commuters, and with this influx came the promise of commercial profits. Thus, close to Oakwood Station this parade of typical 1930s small shops was built. The retention of the trees softening their setting is to be welcomed - but for how long, when in most parts of London insurance companies break out in a cold sweat at the very sight of a suburban tree. Look around and see the so-called 'pruning' carried out by nervous councils as they virtually destroy a superb visual asset.
