More about this scene
We are looking down to the road, the old Lewes turnpike from the slopes of the South Downs at Offham (pro- nounced 'Oaf-ham') hill; this was the mustering place of De Montfort's unfortunate Londoners before the battle of Lewes in 1264. The scene is hardly changed today.
