More about this scene
Old Sarum is a hillfort built by the people of the Iron Age, who came to Britain from around 500BC. Its spectacular ramparts and ditches enclosed their community. The inner rampart would have had a wooden stockade. This fort is also the junction of four Roman roads and, after the Norman invasion, was the original Salisbury until the 13th century when a 'new town' was built.
