More about this scene
The River Don flows under Station Lane bridge on the Duke of Norfolk's land. Cottages in the village date from 1845; just to the right was the old Forge Mill. The Cock Inn is still in business, but the old village hall behind is long gone. The 1845 railway line between Sheffield and Manchester closed to passenger traffic in 1970, but it is still in use by British Steel between Stocksbridge and Rotherham.
