Browns Grocery Sweet Shop

A Memory of Oxshott.

1950s generally. My aunt Nora Brown was in charge of the sweet shop at Brown's. My uncle worked with his sisters Sis and Vi in the grocery store. Happy memories of free samples when I went to see my aunt. Happy memories of riding with my uncle as he made deliveries all over Oxshott. I remember the elation when, finally, sweets went off rationing - no more coupons to clip. I was always fascinated by the brass weights and pivot scales that were used to measure purchases. In the 1930s Brown's Tea Room was THE destination for Londoners who took the train to the "Country". Walks in Oxshott Woods and on the Heath, followed by tea and scones at Brown's. How things have changed. I now live in California. I hope the Browns' Corner sign is still there. The regional Council erected it after the last of the Browns had died and the house sold.

My parents have passed away now, but in my Mother's possessions I have found a lovely blue brooch surrounded by white metal. On the reverse of this is engraved "Presented by the Heath Tea Bungalow Oxshott." I did visit the area a couple of years ago in search of further information, but alas just found what I understand to be the shop, near the railway station. I wonder if anyone can give me further information? The family were from Tooting and Mitcham area. I can understand they may have traveled down by train or car for the day but what did they do there to be presented with such a lovely memento?
I moved to Oxshott in 68. I remember the Browns running a Grocery Store and the two sisters runnign the Sweet and Tobacco shop which was a side door in their house. When we first moved there I remember seeing a girl ride a horse into the shop (just the front) and the rider bought some sweets from riding the horse. There was a Prefab building just above the station in the woods where there was a tea room. Very austere Post War with plastic table coverings and I remember two elderly fruit machines. It was very obvious it had seen better days as it was always empty. As to how your Mother was awarded the brooch, I cannot help but the tea room was at the top of the path up from the station into the woods about 20 yds on the left. Beyond it was what looked like an old ice cream depot as it was full of rusting stop me and buy one ice cream tricycles.
Thank you for your input Rich.
I didn't realise my post was till live.
