Doctor John Lytle, Wych House, Holtwood Rd., Oxshott

A Memory of Oxshott.

I was fascinated to read the comments regarding Dr Lytle whom I met in the early 1980s when I was going out with his daughter Sarah. I was brought up in Thames Ditton, went to school at Kings College Wimbledon & had relatives in Esher.
A few years ago, I visited Oxshott but found Wych House (the surgery in 1980) had been demolished & replaced by 2 new properties. Residents were unable to provide any further information at the time.
It would be so good to re establish contact with Sarah after all these years.

Giles Todd.

John Lytle delivered me in my parents house on Sheath Lane in 1950 and was my GP until I married and moved to Ockham. Happy childhood memories of growing up in an idyllic quiet village.
We too went to Dr Lytle! We lived in Sheath Lane in a house called Heathway which belonged to my great grandfather from 1925 and stayed in the family until about 2015. After WW2 my father rented Heathway from my step-great- grandmother until he had accumulated enough capital to build "Winterbourne" on the Crown Estate in Goldrings Road. I went to Oxshott Village School from 5 to 7, (1948-50) then by train (walking through Oxshott Woods!) to Guildford High School. When I was 14 we moved to Guildford. I went to St Andrews Sunday School and sang with Oxshott Choral Society at the Leith Hill Festival. I have many happy memories of Oxshott!
Dr Berridge was the Huitt family doctor. I remember having to walk quite a long way up to his surgery in his house and thought he was rather frightening and very ancient, particularly on the occasion I had a rather ghastly boil that he had to lance. Rose(mary), Carolyn and me, Alison, lived in The Ridgeway off Oakshade Road and went to the Royal Kent School. Our father designed the badge for the new school in Oakshade Road. This was built on land behind our house. I remember being so upset that there would no longer be horses to talk to over the fence. The school was certainly very crowded and my class was billeted out to the Men's Club in Oakshade Road. I was a pretty pesky pupil, carving my initials into my lovely old fashioned desk, swigging beer from the bottles in the carpark during break times..... Can't think why I was removed by my parents and sent to The Rowans in Leatherhead in order to get through the 11+, which I did!
