More about this scene
Early visitors found Paignton 'select, dignified and discreet'; it was the ideal place for the professional gentleman. In 1881 a clubhouse of a non-political nature was formed. In time, land from the Fletcher Trust was acquired, and Mr Bridgeman's classic design erected. Beach shops now fill the front garden, and there is a car park in the café garden. In the background, built in 1885, is Kingswood (originally called The Quarry), which later (c1910) became the home of Paris Singer's wife. In 1939 the land in front of the clubhouse was obtained, and the promenade extended to the harbour.
