Despite the obvious assumption that this sculpture adorns a pub, there was never a pub of that name in this area. Instead the carving was in the garden of a cottage called, appropriately enough, The Elephant and Castle. It was carved in the mid 19th century and originally had a fine pair of tusks – they are broken in this photograph.
