More about this scene
The construction of the Esplanade c1883-84, costing in the region of £10,000, would provide a stable and stylish platform along which the town's chic new visitors could indulge in the fashion for promenading – seeing and being seen were of equal importance. No longer the clamber across rocks and amongst the throng. On such a feature, an esplanade linking all the seafront amenities, resorts were sold.
