Wheeled bathing machines at the water's edge preserve the modesty of Victorian swimmers so none can be seen braving the waters. The vast majority of pleasure seekers here are not only on land but formally dressed. Those taking to the sea do so in rowing boats. The popularity of these inexpensive vessels for hire probably reached their zenith at the turn of the century.
