An Idyllic Childhood

A Memory of Pencoed.

Born in lletai avenue, the street our playground, bottle of water and jam sandwiches were our picnic to take up to Penylan mountain in school holidays. No watches but we always seemed to know when to come home, out all day but parents not worried. Because we were safe! Bonfire behind Trinity vestry (no health and safety). Policemen John and Hopkins kept us all in order! Trinity Sunday School, Cinema on Saturday mornings, the Fair in June, Carnivals. Train to Bridgend Girls Grammar school, frozen milk in Pencoed Juniors. Taken to Pencoed Football, Cricket and Rugby from pushchair days. Still love the last two. Variety shows by local artists in cinema hall Glossop terrace. Pencoed youth club great. Billiard Hall (no females). Val Evans (nee Smith)

I was born in Pencoed in 1939, our house is now a hotel called the Mardy. My father was sent to the area to design and build a benzole plant for the war effort, benzole is a substitute petrol extracted from coal, my two brothers and sisters left the village in 1949 on the death of my father
