Here we see the changing face of the Co-op. From its humble origins in 1840s Rochdale when two dozen Owenite and Chartist workmen had clubbed together to open a store in T'owd Lane, the movement had become nationwide by the end of the 19th century. The aim was the sale of goods at market prices; what would have been the retailer's profit was divided between the membership in proportion to their purchases - better known to most of us as divi day.
