Hop Picking At Tarrington
A Memory of Penrhiwceiber.
I am told that in the 1950's a number of families from Penrhiwceiber would come to Tarrington in Herefordshire to help with the hop picking.
They would arrive at Stoke Edith Station (which was actually in Tarrington) and stay in a disused Mill just over the other side of the lane. The farmer's name was Newton Williams, a bit of a character from all accounts.
My friend Bob, who was one of the Paget boys living in a nearby cottage next to the level crossing, always looked forward to the arrival of the pickers from Penrhiwceiber and was sad when mechanisation put an end to it all.
I'm trying to find out more about the mill's history and would love to hear from anyone who has any memories of time spent here.
