More about this scene
Waiting patiently before setting off up Castlegate, these cart-horses recall the days when they conveyed farmers, their wives and produce into Cornmarket. Surrounding shops found brisk trade exchanging takings for household wares like drapery, utensils, perquisites and some luxuries like tobacco. Some were of long standing like Joseph Pickering, outfitters, or Edmondson the chemist, who commenced trading there in 1726.
