More about this scene
In 1893 Penrith Castle was owned by the London and North Western Railway Company which had stables for their horses inside the ruins. William Strickland is often credited with the building of Penrith Castle. It is more likely, however, to have been constructed for Ralph Neville, Earl of Westmorland and Lord of the Manor of Penrith from 1396 to 1425. The castle was granted to Richard Duke of Gloucester in 1471 and he used it as a base during his period as Lord Warden of the Western Marches. By the mid 1500s it was in a ruinous state and much of the stone was removed for other buildings in the town.
