More about this scene
The top end of the main street in Penzance is dominated by the impressive classical frontage of the Market House and Old Town Hall, erected in 1837. Here stands also the white marble statue of Sir Humphry Davy (1778-1829), the town's famous son, whose best-known invention was the miner's safety lamp. The memorial on a granite plinth inscribed 'Davy' was erected in 1872 close to his birthplace.
