More about this scene
C i t y A t t r a c t i o n s and the smell of gas mantles being lit'. So much of the old has gone; it could never have coped with modern demands and numbers. The municipality has grown rapidly since 1921. The Local Government Act of 1972 ended the old borough, and created a large district in its place, incorporating the old Soke and extending into Cambridgeshire and Huntingdonshire. Borough status was granted in 1974, and a charter was granted to increase city responsibilities. A bright future was assured.
