More about this scene
In Roman and medieval times the castle was on the sea, but this has retreated half a mile away. This view shows the 13th- century drum towers of the castle and the wet moat, now protected by a rustic fence. The ivy has gone; this important medieval castle and Roman fortress ruins were properly consolidated after the Duke of Devonshire gave it to the nation in 1925, some years after these two views were taken. There is now a bridge over the moat beyond the far tower.
