High Kernock
A Memory of Pillaton.
I moved into Pillaton in 1950 at the age of 10 to a smallholding, High Kernock. It was a bit of a culture shock moving from Plymouth to a bungalow with no amenities at all but we got on fine. The viullage then had some amenities in the form of a pub, The Royal Oak, a store, Post Office and a blacksmith. Now all these have gone leaving only the pub. so people have to go out of the village for everything. Down by the river Lynher at Clapper Bridge was the Newton Ferrers estate run by Sir Robert, Lady Diana and their son Valentine. Diana was quite popular in the village belonging to the W.I. and Sir Robert, unlike many estate owners did not allow hunting or shooting on his land. Myt siblings and I took well to country life and I for one was sorry to leave it when I left school.
