Nostalgic memories of Plympton's local history

Share your own memories of Plympton and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

I was resident in Plymouth up until 1963 when I moved to Exeter. However, between 1959 and 1963 I was a Red Cross volunteer at the Plympton Ambulance Station and did duties at weekends. The old Devon County Ambulance service was provided by St John Ambulance and British Red Cross and the latter ran the Plympton station. The original station was in the stables of a large house next to where a modern station ...see more
I lived in Hele Gardens Plympton St Maurice in the 1950.s and attended Plympton Grammar School as did my wife. Does any one remember the name of the vicar of Plympton St,Maurice at that time? I think he had a close relation serving in the RAF. I am now 82 and memory not so good although I do remember happy times at school in the Combined Cadet Force and visits to several air stations during ...see more
When I was at junior school (I was born in 1946) my maternal Granddad lived in Morley Cottages in Colebrook and worked in the signal box at Plympton Station. I lived in Molesworth Rd, down the road from Plympton Grammar School and often used to walk home from Geasons Lane Primary School via the signal box just to see my Granddad. Probably against the rules, he used to let me move the levers sometimes and I ...see more

My name is Robert Best. I was born June 24th. 1939 in Plymouth and evacuated to Princetown in 1941. My Mother, her parents and I moved to Plympton when I was 3 years old. I have clear memories of Princetown, of riding the train up from Yelverton and of first arriving at the house in Plympton. We had no Shelter and we all huddled in the cupboard under the stairs with the back door open when the raids were on. One ...see more
My grandparents, Annie and Charles Edwards, used to live in Merrafield Road where I would visit them during the middle 50's to early 60's. I mostly remember how their back garden sloped sharply downhill and this gave rise to a cellar with a sloping floor, accessible from the back of the house. The front of the house faced open meadows which sloped up to a line of trees. In the meadows were 2 or 3 large craters ...see more
My grandparents, my mother's parents, lived in Vicarage Road, Plympton until 1962 when they moved to Moorland Avenue. As children we always spent our holidays with them and I have early memories of accompanying my father or grandfather in the 1950´s to the road bridge overlooking the station to watch the trains go by. Bells ringing in the signal box and then signals moving into the "off position" ...see more
