More about this scene

We are looking north from the railway station and level crossing, and there is little of distinction in the architecture. An 1870s terrace of yellow brick flats over shops runs south from the scaffolding on the left, but the rest is mediocre 1930s and 1950s suburban building, apart from the Polegate Inn on the right (a Victorian inn, bizarrely renamed the Dinkum) and a United Reformed church of about 1900 in the left middle distance.

The Crossing C 1965
The crossing photo was taken later than 1965 as we used to drive my grandfathers cattle through Polegate High Sreet early in the morning from New Barn Farm, Sayerlands to graze on land at the Black Path throughout the 1960's. The Small Zoo
I too remember these gardens as a small child in the 1950s. I loved the wallabies, and my special treat was the water otter. How I laughed - there was a pen with a small pond. There was a chain that hung over the pond, and a notice that said to see the water otter, please pull the chain.....when said chain was pulled, the water otter appeared! It was a rusty old kettle full of holes - hence the name water 'otter (we loved to drop our "h"s !!

Wannock Tea Gardens
I worked at Wannock Tea Gardens during the school holidays. I remember all the slices of Bread we had to butter and I still make sure that it reaches out to each corner. We really had to work hard carrying heavy crockery to the many out-building where the parties were fed. The Treacle Mine Restaurant
My friends and I are intrigued with how this restaurant got it's name. There are a few stories being told but none feel quite right. I am guessing it was some kind of April Fool, can anyone help please?

Despite over 20 years’ work on the archive, these scans have still not been individually checked and may prove to be damaged, faded, or not of sufficient quality to ever be offered in our full product range. However, if you would particularly like to buy one of these please get in touch quoting the Frith negative number,(s) the town name and size of print you would like to buy. On receipt of your enquiry our archivist will check the scan and advise you if the quality is good enough.

What is an Album?

An album is a way to save a selection of Frith photos, maps and memories that are of interest to you.

Creating an Album enables you to make short lists and then make a final selection from the album. In particular it makes ordering things like calendars much easier - simply create an Album of the 12 photos you like and then use the Album when placng your order - our order process will give you this option.

You can create as many Albums as you want, so perhaps make one for your hometown, where you live now, where your parents live now etc.
