The canal reached Atherstone in 1771; by this time all the authorised capital had been spent and James Brindley sacked. The canal eventually reached a junction with the Frazeley & Birmingham Canal in 1790. Despite the delays in completing the cut, it remained one of the most profitable of England's waterways, paying dividends up to 1947.

I had heard so much about this village & surrounding areas from my father, Arch Wallbank, who was born 1896 @ 46 Watling St. the corner of New st. he left for NZ in Oct. 1913 & died Auckland 1965.. My Knight relations had lived in this house (butchers) & a Methodist Lay preacher..James Knight. My Wallbank grandpa drew this cottage in many autograph books & sketched a framed one in ...see more
My Dad was born in Clayton Le Moors, Lancashire county, but I have traced the Baxter family back to Polesworth in the 17th century where in ends. I wonder if there are any Baxters' still in that area. My goal is to visit Polesworth to do more research. Thanks in advance to anyone who might be helpful. Sincerely, Richard Baxter
I am now an 82 years old great grandmother and I have lived in Australia for many years. My family lived in Coventry, and when I was 12 my sister and brother and I were evacuated to Polesworth. At first the billeting officer, a Mrs Straughan who was running the local Womens Volunteer service, couldn't find anyone who could take all 3 of us, so she took us to her lovely home Pooley Hall.
