Polgooth grew up in the 19th century as a mining village to the south west of St Austell. The girl (centre) stands outside the post office stores, which is still a lifeline in the village. There is an air of dereliction in this picture; the site of the old barn on the right has been redeveloped as the Polmewan Flats.

I use to live at Goonamarth until the 60"s my mother lived there until houses were pulled down,we went to Carthew school which involved a good 3 mile walk,we used to walk pass Greensplat steam engine house that was still working that pulled the skip up the sand burrow,one year the level at Carranrarrow disused clay pit broke and nearly washed away the end house,on the way to school we walked pass the ...see more
1971 - 1984: Whilst I lived in village the Post Office was where you got all you needed in an emergency. As a little one, I personally loved the vending machines on the wall. In those days we all used to be sent out for groceries even as young ones, as the village was safe and everyone knew each other.
