Coates Endowed Infant Scool

A Memory of Ponteland.

I started school in 1954 and Mr Parker was the headmaster.
I lived in Ashbrook Drive and the houses were brand new.
I do remember walking home from school one lunchtime in the snow and arriving home unexpectedly as I was supposed to stay for school dinner.
My mum had to feed me and then get my sister and brother(who was a baby) ready, and walk me back to school.
We went to see Mr Parker(a very kind man) and he asked me why I'd gone home when I was supposed to stay to school dinner.
I remember saying to him that they didn't give me nice things to eat like my mummy.
He asked me what I meant by nice things and I told him things like pork chops
I will never forget his words - after he stopped laughing.
He said God love her the child wants pork chops for 1/6d a week!!!!!!
I have very fond memories of Mr Parker and loved my time at the school.
My name was Veronica Thompson and my younger sister also went to the school.

I started school in 1955 -Mrs Johnson was my first teacher . I remember using sand trays to draw numbers in , those hard desks with the drop down seats, the small blackboards for writing on - before graduating to those 'jotter' books , the blotting paper. chatting with that guy with a limp who was the road sweeper. Kicking balls over the wall onto the road. Seeing the blacksmith go past each lunchtime in those huge clog boots - a gentle giant. The whole school going across the road to have injections( and getting checked for lice!) -upstairs in that corner building that became the Ponteland library (later a real estate office) - next to McConville's. I remember getting the bus on Friday night to go to that library - the librarian was vigilant if you tried to take out an 'adult' book like James Bond and made you put it back.
I took the no. 5 bus home every day at lunchtime as my Mam didn't want to pay the 1/6 per week. Then wolfed it down and ran to get next bus back.
Halcyon days.
