More about this scene

In the middle of this collection of buildings is a pub called the Admiral Rodney. Lord Rodney, who died in 1792, is particularly remembered for his victory at the Battle of the Saintes in the West Indies, which led to peace terms with the French (for a time!). He also, it must be said, made a fortune from the slave trade, both for himself and for the city of Liverpool, where there is a street named after him.

Sparked a Memory for you?

If this has sparked a memory, why not share it here?

My mum was born at the end of this row, near the Bollin, to Percy & Gertrude SMITH, in 1934. In 1978, Percy was recorded while he walked around the village sharing his encyclopedic knowledge. I will be dropping off CDs of this recording next weekend while we're at the Bridge Hotel, where my wife and I were married in 1997. A. Hine Minnesota
