More about this scene
Raglan Castle is an imposing, solid structure and was one of the last defensive castles to built in Wales. It dates from the mid 15th century and was modelled by William Herbert in the contemporary French style. These features included a tower-keep separated from the rest of the castle by its own moat, multiangular towers, and ornate machicolations of the type seen here adorning the tops of the hexagonal corner towers of the gatehouse. The circular gun-ports at the base of the gatehouse walls are obscured by hedging.
