The two sluice gates were installed at Smeaton's request so as to scour away the outer Harbour's constant bogey— silt. Moored between these gates is a sailing bark, and in the distance can be seen the East and West Piers. Later, the eastern pier on the left would have a wooden landing stage added to allow London paddle steamers to moor up and disgorge their passengers.
